The novel has a strong factual aspect, as you would expect from an author renown for investigative journalism.
I would highly recommend it. Finally, who is the woman who stole the baby and what did she do with it? So read the story! Slowly the reader is able to put parts of the jigsaw into place.
It was narrated in a unique way which added different elements to the story. A very heartbreaking story. I must admit I was unsure about this book to begin with, but once I got through the first few chapters I became intrigued as to what was going to happen.
The story did paint DoCS as being pretty useless, although I can’t judge on that as I’ve never had any need for them before personally. The woman walked out to the car park, towards an old Corolla. Whatever her reasons for choosing to portray her stories through the eyes of a third party involved in the story but not the main protagonistit is a literary device that works fantastically for her. When she is blamed, social services take away her baby, sending the mother into depression and madness. Characters seemed to just vanish and were never heard of again, whilst others vanished and then suddenly popped up again.

Having read the back of the book, I was expecting an action packed thrill ride, but it isn’t like that, it’s a slow tale through the history of a family which eventually culminates in a tragedy. She might have been 15 years old, and womanly in all ways that matter, but she was still my little girl, the one who’d had to grow up without her mum, who hadn’t been able to make any friends, who got teased for being big and, who, like most teenage girls, probably wanted nothing so much as a bit of attention from a boy, and this one – this idiot, Haines – was the only one who was paying her any.
The fate of these people, living close to the line, keeps you wondering what caroine happen next; what disaster will these people bring on themselves, and what new political correct action will the social goodbe inflict on them? oberington
I’d read the blurb and the first chapter so I had an idea in my mind of where the book was going but Overington turned it right on its head and it turns out that the first chapter is actually somewhat towards the later part of the story. What you take from letter and how you believe things should have happened is down to the reader to decide.
How does that happen?! There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news. Blue stayed local for a while and then headed up to Lightning Ridge to try his hand at mining. It’s so refreshing to read a book like this being set in Australia. I really loved this book. Every now and then you read a book where everything works for you.

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty also gets day enthusiastic thumbs up. This one did more than that, it showcased the culture of the town as well. He was born there, married there, bought his first house there, welcomed his three children there and never wanted to leave.
This is my third book by Oferington Overington and I amazed at the ease in which I am sucked into her books and can not put them down. I finished this book last night with tears in my eyes.
