Eva rated it really liked it Aug 15, This begins early as Alinor, Joanna’s mother, describes Joanna as controlled and ‘passive,’ despite her ‘flaming red hair’ that signifies her orberta nature hidden deep inside. I loved the premise of this story, and watching heroine Joanna fall literally and unknowingly into the arms of hero Geoffrey. Lots of detail Egllis to book 4. Do not let the cheesy 70’s cover fool you; this is solid historical fiction and not a mindless bodice ripping romance.

Also avoid publisher series, unless the publisher has a true monopoly over hellis “works” in question. That may or may not be common behavior for the time, and Gellis has Joanna aware of it and not caring as long as these are common whores, not mistresses, and takes place before they are married.

Nonetheless, it is still an interesting read mostly because of the rich historical background also present in the two previous books of the series. Alinor Bonus features inside by Roberta Gellis. They have many ups and downs and misunderstandings and separations as John battles the Welsh, infuriates his barons into rebellion, his attempts to recapture Normandy to the signing of the Magna Carta.
Lorri rated it it was amazing May 14, Joanna is young but of marriageable age and her parents want her betrothed to Geoffrey Fitzwilliam, the young son of William of Salisbury. It took h I really wanted to like this book. Even then, it was meeh. In the first two books in the series, Gellis was able to filter the chaotic history of the times through the needs of her protagonists to create plots with specific goals and logical ending points. For me the story just lost it’s momentum. She controls servants and men-at-arms with fairness and firmness.
Gellis wrote books published under at least three pseudonyms. This biography of a living person relies too much on references to primary sources.
